About Dr. Max

Dr. Maxwell Wesenberg, DPT: From Personal Pain to a Life Helping Others

Founder of Max Wellness Pain Relief and Wisconsin's first Calmare Scrambler Therapy provider.

Growing up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, I was always fascinated by sports and human potential. That passion led me to become a physical therapist specializing in neuropathic pain and Scrambler Therapy, a path deeply shaped by my own experiences with pain and illness.

As a kid I loved gymnastics, but a hook-shaped bone defect began catching on my medial collateral ligament as I grew taller. The pain became so extreme that I would lose consciousness on landings, and I was forced to give up the sport I loved. Life threw another curveball at 17, when I developed toxic shock syndrome, a life-threatening condition that caused my internal organs to shut down. After hospitalization, time in a wheelchair, and extensive rehabilitation to relearn how to walk, I emerged determined to help guide others through similar challenges.

My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Driven by my interest in neurological conditions, I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin.

After graduation I worked as a travel physical therapist, moving to a different facility every 3 months, which immersed me in a wide variety of medical settings across Wisconsin. That experience caught the attention of a prosthetics company, which recruited me as an in-house consultant. There I worked at the forefront of prosthetics technology, addressing phantom limb pain and other complex neurological conditions.

One patient's story stayed with me. A stroke survivor with post-stroke thalamic pain syndrome lived with unrelenting, burning pain. Digging into research on neuromodulation technologies for him, I came across a published clinical trial that mentioned the Calmare Scrambler Therapy device, developed by Professor Giuseppe Marineo at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. After studying the available literature, I went all-in on opening a clinic to bring this technology to Oshkosh, starting in February of 2022.

I earned Calmare Certified Provider status within my first year of practice by successfully treating a wide variety of pain conditions. Then, in January of 2025, I was one of the first 10 providers to attend the advanced training course in Rome with Professor Marineo, learning from the inventor himself with a focus on treating the most complex conditions.

My personal experiences, academic training, and clinical practice all shape how I work. I believe in empowering patients with knowledge, so they understand their conditions and can advocate for themselves in the medical system.

Today I continue to explore the latest advancements in physical therapy, seeking new and effective ways to relieve pain and restore function. I have a growing interest in related modalities such as Red Light Therapy, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, Vagus Nerve Stimulation, and Neuromuscular Stimulation, along with the hands-on techniques of Fascial Counterstrain as developed by Brian Tuckey at the Jones Institute.
