How Scrambler Therapy Works
How Calmare Scrambler Therapy Works
A non-invasive, medication-free treatment that addresses a root cause of hard-to-treat nerve pain: disrupted communication within your nervous system.
Rebalancing your nervous system for pain relief
Chronic nerve pain is frustrating and disruptive. Medications can carry side effects, and surgery is not always the right option. Calmare Scrambler Therapy is a non-invasive, medication-free treatment that addresses a root cause of hard-to-treat nerve pain: disrupted communication within your nervous system.
Your nervous system is a communication network
Think of your nervous system as a vast messaging network. It carries electrical signals between your brain, spinal cord, and every part of your body. In a healthy system those signals travel smoothly, letting you feel touch, temperature, and pain normally. Your brain constantly uses this information to build a mental map of your body and surroundings so it can anticipate and respond, the same way it warns you to slow down when you spot ice on a winter sidewalk.
Why chronic nerve pain happens
Specialized sensory nerves called nociceptors act as your body's threat detectors. When they sense potentially damaging stimuli, they send warning signals to your spinal cord and brain. Nociception is the signal; pain is your brain's interpretation of it.
After an injury or illness, this system can become distorted. Damaged nerves and other factors can alter, exaggerate, or misroute these messages, so your brain keeps perceiving pain even when no physical injury remains. This can develop in two ways:
- Central sensitization: the brain's pain centers keep receiving pain signals and lose the ability to filter them, so pain continues even without stimulation.
- Peripheral sensitization: nerves in the skin, muscles, and joints become so oversensitive that even light touch hurts.
Either way, the pain is very real and should be taken seriously. Left untreated, sensitization can keep increasing and the pain experience can worsen.
What the Calmare device does
Calmare Scrambler Therapy uses a computer-controlled device to deliver low-level electrical pulses through electrodes placed on the skin near your area of pain. The pulses aim to do two things:
- Interrupt the disrupted signals: carefully designed pulses help interrupt abnormal pain signals traveling from the nociceptors to your brain, breaking the cycle of pain perception.
- Retrain the pain pathways: the device sends small packets of "non-pain" and "self" information that mimic how your own nervous system communicates. Repeated daily, this slowly overwrites the old pain pattern with a new non-pain message until it sticks and provides lasting relief.
Personalized to your nervous system
Scrambler Therapy targets the specific zones of your nervous system related to your pain, called dermatomes (the skin regions served by each spinal cord level). Dr. Maxwell Wesenberg, DPT asks a series of questions every single day of treatment to fine-tune electrode placement and settings as your symptoms change.
Two honest things to know
Individual response varies
Not everyone responds the same way. That is exactly why we offer our You Only Pay If It Works guarantee: you can experience the treatment and judge its effectiveness without risking another medical bill with nothing to show for it.
Boosters maintain long-term relief
Your initial series of sessions helps establish new, healthier signal pathways. Like an old habit, the nervous system can occasionally drift back toward its old pain patterns. Periodic booster visits remind your nervous system of the new, pain-free pathways.
See if Calmare is right for you
Your initial evaluation includes a full Scrambler session, and many patients notice a change during that very first visit.
